I’ve always been a writer, but I for years, I avoided it for everything I was worth. Instead, I studied International Relations in at Mount Holyoke College. I thought (wrongly) that the job market for International Relations students would be better than the prospects of an English or history major.
While working at an international travel company, I was responsible for copyediting and proofreading marketing and galley text for both the organization’s website and its various print campaigns. It was my favorite responsibility. I realized just how much I enjoyed not only writing, but editing and managing the process of writing and creating. Shortly afterward, I began freelancing for a local newspaper, searching for a leg up into a writing and editing career.
A year later, I took a full-time reporter position at a different local paper, and eventually became the paper’s editor. After some time passed, I accepted a position as a full-time marketing proofreader. I began editing and proofreading fiction manuscripts and journalism pieces shortly afterwards.
A history nerd to the core, I specialize in children’s literature, young adult literature, fantasy and historical fiction. I’m especially fond of work that combines several of the elements, but I am happy to read any story that you want to tell! I also retain a soft spot for human interest pieces and journalism.
I am a member of the Editorial Freelancer’s Association (www.efa.org) and ACES, the American Copy Editors Society (www.aceseditors.org).
I’m currently working on my own novel, a mystery set just prior to the onset of King Philip’s War. (See: history nerd. It literally happened in my backyard!) When I’m not writing, I’m working with my horse, spending time with a multitude of plant friends, practicing my aerial and ballroom dance skills, admiring Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, or picking out my next travel adventure.
I’m also interested in biology, biotechnology, and agriculture. If you and I have any interests in common, feel free to send me a Tweet on my Twitter account @JewelHousePress. I love meeting new people, and would be happy to chat all day about any and all subjects.
